Make Large Canvas Wall Art Out of An Old Map

On my last trip to Pottery Barn opps, I mean my local thrift store, I ran across this old globe.  I loved the robin’s egg blue colors but the ugly plastic really threw me for a loop – oh wait!  No it didn’t, I have SPRAY PAINT!  So I quickly went home and applied my beautiful gold and brown spray paint to the plastic.  Wonders never cease – it looked fabulous.

It reminded me that I had previously picked up an old slightly laminated MAP from the same thrift store and I began to wonder what I could do with my new found globe and matching map???? Tick tock, tick tock, my creative juices were coming…….

 (globe was $3.00)
Ah Ha!  My son needed something on his wall in his room and since that is where I put the globe how about matching wall art!

I went to Michaels and picked up a bunch of canvases at 40% off.  I traced around the canvas and cut out each rectangle.  The overall map size was 31”x 50”.  The smaller canvases I bought were 8x10 and the larger were 16x20. You can click the links to take you to my affiliate Amazon where you can purchase similar maps/canvases yourself. :-)

                                                                   World Wall Maps!

Next I spray painted the edges with a left over blue I had from this wine glass project. I am a sucker for anything AGED looking so I spray painted some brown to the edges too.

Once dry, I brushed on some glue and attached my cut out map pieces.

Once that dried (I turned them over to add some weight to the drying process) I wanted to age the edges just a little more so I took out my inking pad, or chalk pad, and “aged” the edges. If you were really brave you could lightly sprayed some gold or brown spray paint on the corners to age it. I also put a little brown glaze on the map itself to try to give it some more character. I can’t decide if it was worth that extra step or not??
Anyway, once dry I came back and put Mod Podge over the top in criss cross strokes. If your map does not have a coating on it (some form of lamination) be VERY careful with applying the glue, a lot of people are saying their map is ripping.  My suggestion would be to find a map with some sort of a coating on it. (not just thin paper)

VOILA!!! Really, that wasn’t too hard. Now I have a BIG piece of wall art for not a lot of money!

Stay creative with me folks – even if you didn’t find a map at a thrift store you could take this same technique and make large canvas art. I found this great tutorial on how to do that with printed scrapbook pages. Just apply (glue) your photo to the canvas and cover with the mod podge. It makes it look like designer canvas prints. The possibilities are endless. How about cutting out a favorite fabric and applying that to the canvas?

Keep those Creative Juices Flowing!!!

I was so excited to see receive an email of one of my readers showing me the map she did using my tutorial! Isn't it great!!  Here's Nicholle’s map. I love the different colors.

Another reader did her nursery in an "It's a small world" theme!

Question: when you remade the globe with gold and brown spraypaint... is that like a gold underneath with brown on top lightly? I'm trying to do something similarly, but hadn't thought of doing it with two colors of spray paint.

What's the technique or is there a gold and brown (mixed) spray paint? gr8ricefamily@yahoo.com

  56. If you wanted to go even cheaper, you could try using pizza boxes(unused ones- pizza places will share if you ask nicely) or the sturdy type of cardboard boxes that multiple books come in from Amazon- you know wide but not too deep. Similar in dimension to pizza boxes, but in rectangular shape as opposed to just square. They are pretty close to the same dimensions as canvases. A little gesso on the sides and top and you've got a blank canvas to work on. I currently have a stack of these boxes left over from all my birthday shopping(I bought books). I think I am going to use my boxes and that folded up world map I have and stop the complaining coming from my boys about their "bare walls".

    ReplyDelete
  64. Reply @ Bethany,

The map wasn't heavily laminated but it did have a coating on it. I didn't wrap any part of the map around the canvas so it was fairly easy just to cut out to size and apply the glue. Do a google search for maps, sometimes you can really find a steal. Also I once saw some really cool map wrapping paper that would totally work for this project and it was under 5 bucks. Hope that helps!

  88. Hi Selina,
I love this idea! I am so inspired to do one myself. I have always wanted a big world map in my home, and I have decided to go get the supplies this week. Would you recommend a certain type of glue for gluing down the maps? Also, does any spray paint work, or is it spray paint specifically for canvas? When you used your stamp pad to antique the corners, did you use a brown stamp pad?
Thanks for your help! I'm very excited.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Reply@Nicholle: Happy to inspire you! I used plain old elmers glue to glue it down to the canvas but my map was quite stiff and had some kind of sealer on it. If it was a papery/flimsy map, I would highly suggest using the 3M spray adheisive. Any spray paint works! I did use brown and a litle gold for my stamp pad. Any shade of brown will help age the edges. Have fun! Send in a picture when it is done :-)

  98. Selina, this is amazing! I am totally inspired!!! Did you have to iron the map before doing this project? I found a map in clearance(!) but it has been folded for a long time.... I'm not sure if it's not necessary to iron out the wrinkles or not :-)

    ReplyDelete
  99. Reply:

    So glad you are inspired!

I didn't have to iron my map because it was in a roll and is slightly laminated or has a stronger film over it.

You could try ironing your map, maybe put a towel over the map before you iron. You can spread it out with the glue on the canvas but if the map is thin, you'll really need to do it carefully so it doesn't rip.

  100. This is so beautiful! I bought a 73x48" antique-style map for my boyfriend, not knowing how expensive it would be to frame it. This is even more gorgeous, and I plan on spending the next few days making this.

Quick question for you, if you'll indulge me! I purchased both laminated and plain versions of the map. I saw that you said yours wasn't heavily laminated, but had a coating. I'm worried that the laminated one that I purchased will be TOO laminated:

    http://www.amazon.com/World-Executive-Laminated-National-Geographic/dp/0792283252/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1337099995&sr=8-2

Should I use the paper version instead? Also, does mod podge brushed over laminate still look good?

    THANK YOU!

    ReplyDelete
  101. Reply@ 100 Man Experiment:

Well, without actually feeling the map it's hard, but I would say try the laminated one. It actually might make it easier since a lot of people struggle with the paper maps being really thin and getting wrinkles or bubbles as you lay them out. If the laminate is so heavy it stands up on it's own and is stiff as a board you might run into problems looking like the final map art piece is plasticy? Honestly, I am not sure what to tell you not having felt your map, but I would say give it a try. One of my readers had go out and buy a second map in her attempt to make it! Read up on all the comments of others who have tried this map and read her post:
    http://globalcole.blogspot.com/2012/02/world-on-canvas.html

Good luck and like always, I LOVE seeing the final project done so send me a photo and feel free to comment your experience so others will know what to use :-)

  106. I tried making this, but it was a total failure. :( The paper map got all wrinkled up, and the ModPodge made it too wet and actually damaged some of the print. Once I ran into problems, I read all the comments and realized others had the same problems too.

Rand McNally sells a laminated map too. It's sent rolled up in a tube, so it it's a super stiff laminate. I'm hesitant to buy another map if it's not going to work. Have you heard back from any of your readers that had success with a laminated map? I know there were some commenters who asked about using a laminated map, but there aren't any follow-up comments saying that it was successful. I really hope it will work because I love the look of it. Plus, I already have 12 painted canvases I don't know what else to do with if the map doesn't work. Please let me know if you have a chance. Thank you.

    Hi Lauren,

Yes, my map did have a slight laminate to it. (not super stiff but definately a coating) I will write that in the original post. I am sorry it wasn't working out for you! You could also try being very conservative with the mod podge? My guess is the laminated one would be the way to go. Hope that helps....check out Nicholles post (a few comments above) I think she had your problem then fixed it. She talks about making hers (and she did do it twice!)

  111. After weeks of procrastinating and fear of ruining another map, I finally got around to cutting and gluing my laminated map to the canvases. It was so quick and easy, and I didn't have any bubbling or ripping problems. Laminated is definitely the way to go. For anyone else wanting to try this project, I ordered the World Rolled Laminated map from Rand McNally: http://store.randmcnally.com/wall-maps/m-series-world-wall-maps.html

It worked great with 10 8x10s and 2 16 x 20s. I just had to cut off the border for everything to measure out correctly.

Thank you so much for providing this project and for answering my questions after my pathetic first attempt. I love it and am so happy with how everything turned out! Thank you!

  112. Phew Lauren! I feel horrible when I hear a horror story! I am so glad it worked out. Thanks for adding the link too! I just (Aug 15 2012) saw that Costco was selling two school world maps for 15.00 (laminated) I bet they do it every year before school starts!

  113. I am going to do this project this weekend. What kind of glue do you reccommend using?

  114. Hi,

You did a fabulous job with the map. I appreciate your artistic sense and gladly admit that I copied your example and did the same for my daughter. It now occupies proud place on the wall in the study. Thank you for the inspirational idea!

  116. Awesome map on canvas, looking for an antique map myself to print on canvas. Have you tried decorating with a single Photo to Canvas across multiple panels?

  117. Looks amazing! I am doing something similar now. I have a question though - what did you do to the edges of the map/canvas after you glued them down to make them blend a bit more? My map is smaller than my canvas about half an inch.

    1. Hi Raye, sorry I have been out of town (or would have answered sooner) but after i glued them down, I did add MORE glue mixture (or mod podge) to aid in the bending....although, if you have a map that isn't laminated, be very careful as a lot of people have had issues with the map tearing when they got it too wet. Hope that helps!

  118. This is a really great idea and a solution to a problem I have been having (not spending a fortune to get a map printed on canvas) I am considering working out the kinks with a first attempt using a silk fantasy map that is both highly detailed and cheap. My only concern is a possible negative reaction between the glue and the silk. Any thoughts of suggestions on getting it right the first time? (seraph147@gmail.com)

    1. Hi! I have never worked with silk on canvas.....I wish I could give you some good advice but I'm not sure what to say.....I would just give it a shot! Let us know what happens.

  120. I've never used glaze before. What kind did you use, how much and how did that work over the laminate?

    1. The glaze is just like a topcoat for the project. You can use the glue and water mix or by the professional kind which is called mod podge. You just want a thin layer over the top. You don't want to drenched. If it's super laminated already the mod podge mix might not work very well. If you really like the look of it without using the place just keep it that way. I just found that it made the canvases look more attached like individual art pieces. Best of luck and thanks for hanging out on Creative Juices Decor!
