How to Make Your Bed Look Like a Designer Styled It

Have you ever made your bed, stepped back and thought, why does mine still look nothing like the beautiful beds I see in magazines?

I feel you and that's why I'm here to help!

The secret usually isn't an expensive bed frame or a mountain of decorative pillows. (although you do need a bed with a headboard!) It's choosing the right pieces and layering them correctly.

Here are five things I do when I want a bed to look polished, comfortable and designer-styled.

1. Start With a Really Fluffy Duvet

This is one place where quality makes a difference. After lots of researching (always trying to find the best balance of price and quality!!!) I picked this down duvet insert for my OWN king bed.  I've been very happy with it! It adjusts to my temperature and remains very full and fluffy.

A full, fluffy duvet insert gives your bed that luxurious look. If your duvet is flat, the entire bed will look flat—no matter how many pillows you add.

Look for an insert with plenty of loft, and consider sizing up for a fuller, more substantial look.  I had the measurements of my specific King duvet cover and I chose a California king insert because it was just a little bit bigger and I'm super happy I did. A little bit overstuffed is better than not hitting the edges! I'd highly recommend looking up your measurements or hand measuring your current duvet and see what size would really fill it out.🙂

2. Mix Solids With a Soft Pattern

Your bedding doesn't have to be completely neutral. (Although neutral is a very classic/gorgeous!)

A subtle stripe, floral, block print or small-scale pattern can make a bed feel interesting. BUT, if you choose a patterned duvet, keep the other layers a little simpler, usually solids.

The goal is coordinated—not matchy-matchy.

3. Stack Your Sleeping Pillows

Yes, this is the latest trend and one of my favorite ways to style a bed right now.

For a king bed, put two X large (27x37) Euro shams (or three if you get the standard 26x26 size) against the headboard, then lay your sleeping pillows flat and stacked two deep on each side.

Finish with one beautiful lumbar pillow.

It feels polished without looking overly fussy.

4. Add a Layer at the Foot

There are a few ways to do this.  An easy way is just a throw blanket at the bottom. This is the chunky knit throw that I purchased for my own home. It's absolutely amazing . Great quality. The only downside (if you call it a downside) is it's pretty heavy so if I ever put it over me while sleeping, I'll end up too hot 🙂You could also fold a quilt or coverlet across the lower third of the bed, then casually drape a textured throw over one corner.

This is where you can really bring in texture—linen, quilted cotton, chunky knits, velvet or woven fabrics.💛

5. Don't Over-Pillow Your Bed

You don't need a mountain of decorative pillows.

A few well-chosen pillows, beautiful bedding and great texture will look much more sophisticated.

And let's be honest—you have to move those pillows every night. 😂

My Designer Bed Formula

Euro shams → sleeping pillows stacked two deep → one lumbar → fluffy duvet → folded quilt or coverlet → casually draped throw.

That's it.

The trick isn't adding more. It's choosing better pieces and layering them intentionally.

Sometimes the difference between an ordinary bed and a magazine-worthy bed is simply knowing what to layer—and what to leave out.

I hope this gives you a little inspiration for your own home. 💛 Sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest impact. Be sure to explore my other posts for mood boards, EASY designer tips, furniture inspiration, and shoppable finds to help you create a home you truly love.
