Can You Decorate With a Black Rug? Here's How to Make It Work

Have you ever looked at a dark rug and thought, could I pull that off in my home? I'm here to show you what I think would be the best way to decorate around it. Dark rugs can have a very fun/moody vibe, but what usually happens is people think they need to lighten everything else up and that's where I think they make the mistake! Here are my thoughts on decorating a room around a charcoal or dark colored large area rug.

So let's take a look at how these rooms successfully pull off a dark textured rug.

What Makes a Black Rug Work?

1. Pair It With Darker Furniture

The rooms that caught my attention didn't fight the rug. They embraced it. Dark sofas, rich wood tones, and darker furniture help the rug feel intentional and grounded rather than standing out on its own.

2. Keep the Walls Light

Light walls create contrast and keep the room feeling open and inviting. The combination of light walls and a dark rug creates a beautiful balance.

3. Use Lighter Accents

Pillows, throws, artwork, and greenery help soften the darker foundation and keep the room feeling warm and welcoming.

After studying these rooms, I noticed a common theme. The spaces I liked most paired a large black textured rug with darker furniture, warm wood tones, and a few lighter accents for contrast. The result feels cozy, sophisticated, and surprisingly inviting.

What surprised me most was that the rooms I loved weren't dark caves at all. Most had plenty of natural light and lighter walls. The difference was that they paired the black rug with darker furniture and warm wood tones, then layered in lighter accents for contrast.

French Furniture Painting w/ Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Blue

Do you guys like entering giveaways?  I try to enter them because wouldn’t it be fun to win?? Well I DID win some chalk paint from Southern Hospitality’s Blog by Stylish Patina the other day.  (super cool, I checked and I was 1 out of 250 – wow!)  Anne Sloan Chalk Paint So I get this chalk paint and wax in the mail and to be honest with you I had NO IDEA what this stuff even was???  I totally had to research on the internet and hope to find other blogs that have used it.  I did – actually a LOT of bloggers have written posts on it, one of my favorites was Perfectly Imperfect .  I guess this stuff is the HOT product on the market. Pottery Barn Knockoff–Distressed Clock Decor

Ahhhhhh Pottery Barn.  The gorgeous pictures, the GIANT price tags.  If only we could re-create for less everything we see in that magazine.  Well today’s post will give that a try  – Pottery Barn for under $10.00.  Yep, that’s right, this next project cost me around 6 bucks.  When I was at the thrift store I spotted this lonely round board.  It was almost 2 feet around, insanely heavy and covered in laminate but I thought hummmm……this has some CLOCK potential!  So I bought it for a whopping $1.50. Here is the lovely BEFORE picture: And here is the AFTER: Now how I got there.  :-) First I distressed the plastic and wood by sawing the edges, hammering the center, and quickly sanding the entire circle.  I didn’t spend a lot of time doing this because I had another idea to help with the distressing which you’ll see in the next few steps.
